Exhibition at the Centre Pompidou-Metz
December 31, 2023 – May 27, 2024 (closed Tuesdays)<\/p>\n\n\n\nLacan’s thought remains unexplored in the museum world, even though he had a strong relationship with works of art. Lacan was closely involved with twentieth-century art and artists (Salvador Dal\u00ed, Andr\u00e9 Masson, Georges Bataille, Pablo Picasso and Dora Maar), and never ceased to draw on art of all periods in his teaching. More than 40 years after the psychoanalyst’s death, the exhibition at the Centre Pompidou-Metz will explore Lacan’s special relationship with art, bringing together the works he himself indexed, the artists who paid tribute to him, and the modern and contemporary works that echo the major conceptual articulations of his thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Accessible by train from Paris-Est station, 1h30 direct journey. The Centre Pompidou Metz is a 10-minute walk from the arrival station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition, organised in association with Mexico City’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), lifts the veil on these discoveries. Their study reveals not only a dynamic and predatory society, but also artistic excellence and complex symbolic and religious thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Institutional psychotherapy<\/a> ” is a psychiatric practice that began in the mid-20th<\/sup> century, based on the premise that in order to treat patients, the hospital must first be treated. In other words, the mental disorder must never be isolated from its social and institutional context. Inspired by these revolutionary psychiatric and human experiments, which rely on the collective and on artistic creation, this exhibition looks at different ways of transforming places of isolation into places of protection, refuges against the violence of society.<\/p>\n\n\n\nIt features films by Fran\u00e7ois Pain, who documented life at the La Borde clinic, and the words of leading practitioners of institutional psychotherapy<\/a> (Fran\u00e7ois Tosquelles, Jean Oury, F\u00e9lix Guattari), and brings together artists, as well as carers and educators, who have initiated collective artistic practices in various structures linked to mental health care. These experiences, past and present, in France and elsewhere, show how art is a tool for emancipation, an active and critical form of togetherness and an expression of vital poetry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
